Key experience: Food microbiology

Marc Heyndrickx graduated as a PhD in Microbiology from the Ghent University in Belgium in 1991. After a post-doc at the same university, he joined the Flanders Research Institute of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (abbreviated as ILVO) in Belgium in 1997 as a senior researcher. From 2001 onwards, he became scientific director at the Technology & Food Science Unit of ILVO. In this function he is responsible for the research group on chemical and microbiological food safety. His current research focus is on antimicrobial resistance dissemination in a One Health context, and detection and remediation of foodborne pathogens like Campylobacter, Listeria and Salmonella in a farm to fork approach. In this work, the applicability of biosensors is evaluated in collaboration with other partners. He is also visiting professor at the Veterinary Faculty of Ghent University.
