In 2025, we celebrate two important milestones: the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Both of these moments reflect the global push for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Gender equality in science is key to building a better future for everyone. However, women and girls still face many barriers and biases that make it harder for them to pursue careers in science. To close the gender gap in science, we need to challenge stereotypes, encourage role models to inspire girls, provide support to help women move forward, and create inclusive spaces where diversity, inclusion, and fairness are prioritized.
In TITAN, we are proud to present some of the many female scientists of our consortium and some of their thoughts:

“Including women in science breaks harmful stereotypes and gender norms that restrict potential and perpetuate discrimination. Additionally, it brings diverse perspectives that drive innovation and creativity.” – Isabelle Guelinckx, Project Coordinator, ILSI EU, Belgium

“Women in science bring diverse perspectives that drive innovation, challenge existing norms, and create more inclusive solutions. In fields like food tech and digital health, these insights lead to the development of technologies that meet the needs of all communities. Celebrating women in science means recognizing the unique contributions that shape a smarter, healthier, and more sustainable future.” – Isabel Hoffmann, Tellspec, United Kingdom

“Celebrating the achievements of women and girls in science is a powerful reminder of the boundless potential within us all. It inspires future generations to dream big and break barriers, knowing that their contributions can change the world.” – Ana Baranda, AZTI, Spain

“On a day like today, I want to take a moment to look back and wholeheartedly thank the incredible women who have paved the way for us in science, while also joining forces to expand this path for those who will follow in our footsteps.” – Marta Prado Rodriguez, USC, Spain

“As a female scientist, this day means visualizing the work and transmitting that ‘Yes, we can.’” – Patricia Rioja, AZTI, Spain

“Science and innovation are transforming agriculture, making it more sustainable and resilient. As an agronomist in agricultural research and technology, I am proud to drive innovation in Agriculture 4.0, supporting both farmers and the environment. Empowering women in science means embracing diverse perspectives to build a smarter, greener world.” – Sara Antognelli, Agricolus, Italy

“In my case, it has been complicated during the last 3 years to combine motherhood with entrepreneurship. I think that this problem is mainly related to women, since we are usually the ones who feel guilty when we spend too much time at work instead of taking care of our children. In my case, this is the major limitation I have encountered about being a ‘woman in science.’ On the other hand, I always felt I had the same opportunities as my ‘male colleagues.’” – Iratxe Perales, MicrofySystems, Spain

“The team of women scientists at AZTI is making significant strides in our pilot case. Their unique perspectives, creativity, and determination are essential to solving the greatest challenges. Women’s contributions can slowly change the world.” – AZTI Team, Spain
These powerful insights from women scientists across diverse fields highlight how their unique perspectives, resilience, and contributions are driving innovation, breaking barriers, and shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and transformative future for science and society.
