TITAN has launched a new online educational programme for university students and food professionals. The course explains how transparency affects food safety, sustainability, authenticity and decision-making across the food chain.
The programme is based on research, pilot activities, and real cases from the project. Across five modules, learners will explore traceability in food supply chains, food safety risks, sustainable food systems, the role of consumers, and the use of new technologies. The course also looks at policy and at the responsibilities of the different people and organisations involved in producing, selling, and regulating food.
Learners are guided through the course by Alex, a food systems professional dealing with a series of tasks during one working day. These include responding to a traceability request, assessing a possible food safety issue, reviewing sustainability information, checking authenticity evidence, and making decisions under time pressure. This storyline helps show how the topics covered in the course relate to everyday work in the food sector.
The modules include videos, presentations, scientific papers, policy briefs, practical exercises, and case studies from TITAN partners. Learners will see examples of allergen management, food safety prediction, shelf-life testing, honey authenticity, and fish freshness. They will also learn how precision agriculture can record farm activities, how digital stock management can reduce food waste in professional kitchens, and how traceability systems can reveal gaps in international seafood supply chains.
The course does not present digital technology as a simple answer to every problem. It explains how tools such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, sensors, and digital platforms can improve access to information, while also showing the importance of reliable data, clear responsibilities, and cooperation between supply-chain actors.
Each chapter ends with a short test to help learners check their understanding. After completing all five modules, participants can request a digital badge as a micro-certificate of completion. The programme is hosted online and can be followed at the learner’s own pace.
