TITAN webinar: Implementing innovative technologies

On May 6, 2025, the TITAN project hosted a webinar focused on using innovative technologies to improve food transparency and sustainability. The session brought together experts from across Europe to discuss new research and practical tools.

Dr. Venla Kytta from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) presented a new method for measuring how sustainable individual food products are. Her model combines environmental data with the nutritional value of foods, comparing them to planetary boundaries. The results show that only a few food products are truly sustainable, even among those often considered healthy. This work could help guide better food choices and support the development of clear, reliable eco-labels.

Professor Chris Elliott from Queen’s University Belfast shared how combining different types of data—known as data fusion—can improve food authenticity testing. Using salmon as a case study, his team combined two advanced analysis methods and achieved 100% accuracy in identifying where and how the salmon was produced. This approach could help prevent food fraud and increase trust in food labeling.

The event also included discussions on the challenges of collecting reliable environmental data, the role of eco-labels, and the need for better education around food sustainability. Attendees shared ideas on how to apply this research in real-world settings, from kitchens to policymaking.

The next TITAN webinar will take place on June 10, 2025, focusing on the food systems approach. All those interested in shaping the future of food transparency are invited to join the TITAN expert network.
